This past week I’ve really been focusing on ways to improve my life. There are things in life that I can’t change, but there are a lot of things I can. And one of the most powerful things I can change is my attitude. I’ve spent every day over the past two weeks waking up in the morning reminding myself to stay positive. And guess what? It’s made a difference. There truly is power in your mindset. So today, I want to talk about the power of being a positive mom.
Let’s start with the obvious. As moms we have a lot going on. Some of us are dealing with difficult children, or work environment, or family dynamics. But those circumstances don’t have to decide your mood. One of my favorite quotes from Rachel Hollis’ book Girl, Wash Your Face is, “When you’re engaged and involved and choosing to enjoy your own life it doesn’t matter where you are, or frankly, what negative things get hurtled at you. You’ll still find happiness because it’s not about where you are, it’s about who you are.”
As part of my new positive thinking routine, I’ve started waking up an hour early to get in a quick run before the workday. For me, working out first thing in the morning helps me to set the day off on the right foot. Exercising fills you with endorphins. And in the words of Elle Woods, “Exercise gives you endorphins. Endorphins make you happy. Happy people just don’t shoot their husbands.” The last part isn’t really relevant as I don’t have the urge to murder my husband. But the part about endorphins making you happy is totally true! Give early morning workouts a try for a week and see how much better your mood will be throughout the day.
I’m sure you can already tell this about me, but I love writing. I write in my full-time job, I write this blog, I’m writing a book, and I also like to write in a journal. I’ve learned the harness the power of being a positive mom by writing down my positive thoughts. Personally, I enjoy the act of physically writing out some positive phrases. You can also type them or create graphics to display on your computer or printed out on your walls. If you’re not a “writer” and prefer not to write out a whole journal entry filled with positive thoughts, try writing just a sentence. For example, you might write “Today will be a great day.” It’s a simple phrase, but it’s powerful. And the more you write it, the more you think it. The more you think it, the more you believe it. And the more you believe it, the more you live it.
This tip is crucial. When you’re trying to really harness the power of being a positive mom, you have to turn around your negative thoughts. We all have negative thoughts that creep into our minds from time to time. Thoughts about whether our kids will ever stop their tantrums. Thoughts about your coworker who constantly treats you with zero respect. Or thoughts about whether you’ll ever lose those last few pounds of baby weight. These thoughts are natural. And to think these thoughts can be eliminated completely is unrealistic.
What’s important is how you react to those negative thoughts. In order to become more positive, you need to turn those thoughts around. Change a negative thought into a positive. Instead of thinking, “I hate how weird my stomach looks,” think about how amazing other parts of you look. Or think about ways you can work on improving your stomach if that’s what you want to do. Like I said, negative thoughts are going to happen. Just don’t focus on them. Change the thought into a positive one or change the topic in your mind completely.
Are there topics that always make you happy no matter what? When I need a positive mindset change, I think about Autumn and Jack giggling. The sound of those two giggling is the most adorable sound I have ever heard. Thinking about their giggles can make me smile no matter what. Think about a situation or topic that always makes you smile and think about that when you’re having trouble with negative thoughts.
Being a positive mom is powerful for your personal well-being. A happy life leads to a healthy life. But being a positive mom can also have a positive impact on your children. Kids are so perceptive and in tune with emotions and moods. Being positive around your kids can have a calming effect on them and their attitudes.
So stay positive, think good thoughts and continue to work on being in charge of your happiness.
