This past weekend, my twins Autumn and Jack turned two years old. I can’t even believe I just wrote that sentence. Two years ago I gave birth to a delightful, beautiful baby girl and a sweet, handsome baby boy. To celebrate the occasion, I did the one thing I love more than shopping: I threw an awesome party. My twins are OBSESSED with Moana. I decided the theme of their twin second birthday party would be Moana and Maui.
(Side note: in addition to last year’s Mickey and Minnie Mouse theme and this year’s Moana and Maui theme, I have a whole list of boy-girl twin birthday party theme ideas. Hopefully they’ll let me us a few of them as they get older!)
Planning and executing this twin second birthday party was quite a process. I thought it would be helpful to share some tips and tricks that I learned, as well as the photos from the party!
The first step in planning a twin second birthday party is probably pretty obvious. After you decide on the date and time of the party, you need to think about the theme of the party. I am a big believer in party themes, especially for kids. Not only are theme parties fun, it also makes planning easier. Once you have your theme, you can easily make the menu and plan activities and decorations to support that theme.
When trying to nail down the theme for my twins’ second birthday party, I did a couple of things. First, I went to the ultimate party planning site: Pinterest. Guys, there are so many ideas on Pinterest and it’s a great place to start that will help you brainstorm the perfect idea. After looking through some ideas on Pinterest, I also started to think about what characters and activities my twins are really interested in. And like I said earlier, my twins are completely obsessed with Moana. So for me, the theme was kind of a no-brainer.
After deciding on your theme, it’s time to think about the number of guests you want to invite. For me, I focused on family and close friends. Since I wanted to have the party at my house, I didn’t want the guest list to get too out of control. We ended up having about 13 kids ranging in age from 1-10 and about 25 adults at the party. It was a little crazy, but so much fun. It’s important to figure out your guest list because that will determine where you can have the party. If you want to have a large party but you have a small house, you’ll want to take a look at other venues.
Food can be the most fun part about a party, so it’s important to think through your menu in the early stages of planning a twin second birthday party. For me, I wanted to plan a menu that on one hand fit with the Moana and Maui party theme, but on the other hand was filled with foods that my twins and other kids will eat.
At the end of the day, this is most importantly a party for your twins. My two-year-olds love eating chicken nuggets or chicken fingers. That is their ultimate favorite food. Here’s the menu we ended up with for the party–with chicken being the “main food.” (I will add that this party was at 3:30pm so it wasn’t designed to be a lunch or dinner situation. We mostly had heavy appetizer-type foods, snacks and desserts. I also labeled some of the food to fit the Moana and Maui theme. (I got the labels I used from Mommy of a Princess).
Chicken fingers and Chick-Fil-A chicken nuggets (labeled as “Hei Hei’s chicken”)
McDonald’s french fries
Noodles and Company Buttered Noodles
Cilantro and lime shrimp (from Costco)
Fruit bowl (labeled as “Fruit of Te Fiti”
Pretzel sticks (labeled as “Driftwood”)
Tortilla chips and salsa & Goldfish (labeled as “Fish and Chips”)
Ocean water (lemonade dyed blue with food coloring)
Red rock candy (labeled as Te Ka Lava Rocks”) (from PartyCity)
Rice Krispies Treats dipped in blue candy melts and drizzled with white chocolate (made by me)
Heart of Te Fiti macarons (made and designed by me)
Moana and Maui cake (made and designed by me)
Because we had kids attending the party who were all ages, we wanted to have fun activities planned for all of them. When planning activities for your twin second birthday party, keep in mind the ages of the kids attending, how long the party will be, and what space you have to work with.
We have several small kid tables at our house, so in the morning room next to the kitchen we set up coloring stations for the younger kids. We set out crayons and printed out Moana coloring pages to have on the table.
For the older kids, I bought a sheet of green paper from Michaels and had my friend Kathleen draw the face of Te Fiti on the paper. I got foam sticker hearts from Michaels for the kids to play Pin the Heart on Te Fiti.
My mom brought over some older kids toys to set up in the basement. And let me tell you, that’s where most of the older kids spent their time during the party. I actually had to stop going downstairs at one point because there were toys everywhere and I would have had a heart attack. But I’m glad we provided those toys and that space set up for the older kids to let loose and just have fun.
I love providing favors at kids’ parties so I wanted to make sure we had favors that matched the Moana and Maui theme, but also something that kids of all ages could enjoy. For this twin second birthday party, guys, I made slime. And not just any slime. I made Tamatoa Shiny Slime. I got the idea from As the Bunny Hops. The slime was super easy to make, all you need is clear glue, borax, water and chunky glitter. I got all the ingredients from Target. I also grabbed some 2oz plastic cups and tops from Giant to store the slime so that each kid could take it with them. And I printed the Tamatoa labels for the slime on my printer. It was easy to put together and they looked really cute. Plus, the kids loved it!!
I also bought a few light-up yo-yos for the older kids to play with and take home. And everyone who came to the party got to have a lei or a floral headband to wear and take home.
Our presents to them included a super cute Fisher-Price food truck that talks and plays music, as well as a Minnie Mouse brunch cafe. The kids are super into food and imagination play right now, so it’s great to see them pretending to serve and eat food with their new toys.
Since I have boy-girl twins, I’ve focused their twin birthday party themes on boy-girl pairings. You don’t have to have a twin birthday party theme that’s specifically focused on twins or pairs, but it’s fun! Someday my twins will be older and will want to have either separate parties or separate themes or no theme all together. Now is my time to explore all of my party theme ideas for them!
Overall, my twin second birthday planning efforts were a success! Autumn and Jack had a blast and they had huge smiles on their faces the whole time. If you’re in the process of planning a twin second birthday party, you got this mama! Take a deep breath, make a plan, and have fun along the way.
