January is by far one of my favorite months of the year, for a few reasons. For one, my birthday is January 9, so that automatically makes it a great month. And second, the start of the year is a chance to start fresh. I know people look down on New Year’s resolutions these days, but I still like making them. I prefer to think of them as goals for the year. Somehow calling them goals helps me stick with them a little better.
If you’re like me and you like to start the year with some good old fashioned goal setting, here are some tips I live by.
I think it’s important when making New Year’s goals to remember to make specific and achievable goals. You want to focus on a few goals that are within reach, but still lofty. I like to make a list and then read over the goals to make sure I’m not setting myself up for failure, but at the same time stretching myself a little.
This is a really important step in this whole New Year’s goals process. Without a plan, you have no chance of actually achieving the goals you set. Trust me. Been there, done that. Once you have a list set out of the specific goals you want to set, go back and make a list of the steps you will take to achieve them.
Making a plan to achieve your New Year’s goals can also help you see if the goals are specific and attainable. This will also help you break down the goal into steps. Take each goal step by step to visualize how you will reach it.
Once you have your goals and your plan to reach the goals, also make a plan to check in. I like to check in on my goal progress every three months. I take a look at my goal and the steps I wrote down. If I’m on track to reach it within my timeline, I keep going. If I notice I’m nowhere near reaching the goal or I see that it’s harder than I thought, I adjust the goal or my plan slightly.
I’m a firm believer that you have to be realistic and willing to adjust your plans. As long as you check in with yourself and stay realistic, you won’t set yourself up for disappointment at the end of the year.
So here are my personal New Year’s goals that I plan to achieve to make the year awesome.
Before I start the list, I want to add that I have an overarching theme for my New Year’s goals. That theme is creating happiness. In all of my goals, the main agenda is to do all these things to create happiness for myself.
Those are my four main New Year’s goals for the year. I plan to work on my goals step by step and check in with myself periodically to make sure I’m on track. In addition to these specific goals, I also just want to overall be a nice person this year. I want to spend quality time with my family and I want to give my best at work. And I want to bake more delicious treats.
Let me know in the comments what goals you’re working on in 2019 and how you’re planning to achieve them!
